With Lena, he leaves the station and follows the attackers beyond mapped routes, tracing their movements through altered hyperspace signatures and information gathered from underworld contacts. As they pursue the group tied to Silas Vane, Jace detects that the Spark is being used to influence wormhole energy in a way that could affect major transit pathways, leading him toward a confrontation with those controlling it.
Pafel Dubois’s Spark Chase is a brilliant middle-grade story that fits a genre niche that has a tendency to fall short for its readership. I like Jace. He’s the kid who doesn’t sit still when something feels off. He’s curious, but more importantly, he acts on it. He’s a solid, intelligent, and driven main character that Dubois fully fleshes out. Ravi operates on a different frequency, and she’s actually the character I loved most. She’s practical, inventive, and she doesn’t wait for perfect conditions. She sees a problem and immediately starts working the angles to find a solution that keeps things moving. The world-building is phenomenal, and the descriptions of space are first-rate, from the Serpent’s Coil surrounding the ship with massive, tumbling asteroids, to the Ghost Nebula glowing with fractured light. The writing style, language, and content are perfectly suited for readers young and young at heart, making this an excellent choice for those who enjoy space travel, inventive technology, and determined young characters.”
