An Seung-ung, Chairman of the Korea Naming Association, has been officially certified as a “Grand Master of Naming” in recognition of his lifelong dedication to Korean name making.

The certification ceremony was held on May 20, 2026, at the Grand Auditorium of the National Assembly Museum during the 15th Korea Challenge Festival, attended by numerous distinguished guests. The Challenge Korea Headquarters and the Korea BEST Master Certification Committee officially recognized An, who has devoted 66 years to the field of Korean naming, as a certified grand master in the naming sector.

An began his career in name making at the age of 16 after learning the principles of naming from his grandfather and inheriting naming-related books and materials from the An Seung-ung family lineage. He later became the first person in Korea to earn a master’s degree in the field of naming and has published several books on the subject. He currently operates the Jeong Bo Name Making Research Institute in Iksan, Jeonbuk Province.

Throughout his career, An has provided name and pen-name consulting for prominent figures from various fields, including actor Ahn Sung-ki, boxer Hong Soo-hwan, and Lee Hak-soo. He has also advised politicians, respected families, and public figures on Korean names and pen names, contributing to the preservation and development of traditional Korean naming culture.

Following his recognition as a “Master Artisan of Naming” in 2020, An has now been certified as a “Grand Master of Naming” in 2026, further solidifying his position as one of Korea’s most respected authorities in K-name making.

In his acceptance remarks, An said, “A name is an important value that can influence the destiny of a person and a family. I am grateful that this grand master certification can help enhance the status of the Korea Naming Association.

”He added, “As more foreigners visit Korea or become naturalized Korean citizens, interest in Korean names is increasing. Through Korean-style names that are easy to pronounce and carry meaningful significance, I hope to share the value of Korean culture with the world.”

An also emphasized the importance of pen names, stating, “When a person receives a noble pen name later in life, it can enhance the dignity and brand value of that person’s life. Until my final breath, I hope to contribute to strengthening the status of naming experts and leaving behind good names through books on naming, personal names, and pen names.

”With growing international interest in Korean culture, An’s recognition as a grand master of K-naming reflects the expanding cultural value of Korean names beyond Korea. His work continues to position Korean name making as both a traditional practice and a meaningful cultural asset in the global era.
