HANOI, Vietnam – At the recent “rednote Global Village Gathering · Vietnam — Audiovisual Cultural Exchange Day,” Wang Yixu, Founder and Chairman of Stellar Pictures, together with Jason Zhang, Founder and President, attended the “China-Vietnam Audiovisual Practice” sharing session.

During the event, Stellar Pictures specially invited actress Cecilia Liu to attend the fan meet-and-greet session alongside the company’s Eastern fantasy drama “Love in Pavilion.” Set in a fictional world, the drama incorporates Eastern aesthetic elements such as the elegance of bamboo and the restrained beauty of traditional ink wash painting. Following its release on iQiyi’s international platform, it topped viewing charts across 14 countries and regions, including Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, and the United States, with TikTok Vietnamese-language topic views surpassing 200 million. On X and Instagram, many viewers praised the drama for its “exquisitely refined visuals and richly detailed craftsmanship.” At an exclusive screening in Singapore, hundreds of fans traveled from multiple countries to attend. Among them were Vietnamese fans carrying hand-drawn portraits of the characters and using newly learned Chinese to exchange their understanding of the characters with audiences from other regions.

As the lead actress of the drama, Cecilia Liu is also widely loved by fans across Southeast Asia. Invited by Stellar Pictures to participate in the event, she interacted closely with Vietnamese audiences and brought themed collectible cards from “Love in Pavilion” as gifts for attendees, where they were warmly received by fans. Since launching on iQIYI, the card series has repeatedly broken sales records. The market response to these derivative products reflects the growing willingness of young consumers to engage with cultural-content consumption, while also demonstrating the highly loyal fan base Stellar Pictures has built around Eastern fantasy and cyber xianxia.

To date, cumulative topic views for Stellar Pictures’ dramas on social media platforms have exceeded 10 billion, spanning titles including “Love Between Fairy and Devil,” “Love Game in Eastern Fantasy,” and “Love in Pavilion,” all of which have gained widespread popularity across Southeast Asia. Based on their broadcast performance in Vietnam and the popularity of these series among both Chinese and Vietnamese audiences, the event organizers selected representative works from each genre to set up themed booths. One of the featured titles in the Costume Drama Elegance zone was “Love Game in Eastern Fantasy,” which attracted large numbers of Vietnamese visitors.

The Vietnamese-dubbed version of “Love Game in Eastern Fantasy” premiered in November 2024 and immediately became the No.1 overseas drama. Its first online run streamed on Netflix and the Vietnamese platform VieON, while its television premiere aired on Ho Chi Minh City Television, HTV7. The series’ Vietnamese-language topic views surpassed 400 million, making it the most discussed Chinese-language film and television work of the year in Vietnam. The drama’s message of “love and peace” was praised by local audiences as “positive, authentic, and deeply resonant.” The theme song “Send to the Moon” sparked a dance trend across school campuses in Vietnam, and the Eastern fantasy-inspired costumes proved immensely popular, with many young Vietnamese women donning similar outfits for performances at various school celebrations.

Buoyed by the sustained enthusiasm of audiences across multiple markets, Stellar Pictures has also recognized the potential of audience co-creation. The company plans to introduce local-language versions of theme songs for more titles in the future, further advancing the localization of its content, enabling audiences in different regions to perform and share these works in languages they are most familiar with, transforming one-way content delivery into two-way co-creation.

From a drama’s premiere to a themed exhibition booth, from a Singapore screening to a Hanoi meet-and-greet, what Stellar Pictures has demonstrated is a pathway for international expansion built on content-driven connection and audience-led engagement. When Vietnamese viewers begin exploring Chinese culture because of the Eastern aesthetics in a fictional world, when fans from different countries become friends through a shared love for the same drama, the real value of cultural export reveals itself in these tangible human connections. For the industry, this transition from “reach” to “resonance” may well be a direction worthy of continued attention as content globalization continues to evolve.
