A remarkable exploration of engineering, history, art, and human achievement, Bridges… Pittsburgh at the Point… A Journey Through History by Thomas G. Leech, P.E., S.E., offers readers an unforgettable journey through the world of bridges and the people who built them.

Written by acclaimed bridge engineer and Carnegie Mellon University adjunct professor Thomas G. Leech, the book combines historical insight, engineering brilliance, and captivating storytelling to reveal how bridges have shaped the City of Pittsburgh, connected communities, and transformed civilization.

Far more than a technical study, this award-winning work invites readers into the fascinating stories behind 34 bridges which have risen and fallen within one mile of the confluence of the Allegheny and Monogahela Rivers in Pittsburgh, PA, over a span of 250 years. Through the words of engineers, architects, historians and everyday people who lived through the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, maps, illustrations, and over 96 historical photographs, readers will discover the beauty, complexity, and cultural importance of some of Pittsburgh’s most extraordinary structures.

The book also highlights the insights and contributions of legendary figures including Leonardo da Vinci, John Roebling, Theodore Cooper, Fredrick Law Olmstead, Jr., Frank Lloyd Wright, and other pioneering engineers and architects whose innovations changed the world forever.

“Bridges are more than structures of steel and stone. They are symbols of creativity, perseverance, and human connection,” said Leech. “This book was inspired by a lifelong fascination with arches and bridge design, and by the remarkable stories hidden behind these engineering achievements.”

Praised for its accessibility and engaging narrative, the book appeals not only to engineers and historians, but also to lovers of architecture, technology, photography, travel, and Pittsburgh history.

James H. Garrett Jr., Provost and Chief Academic Officer of Carnegie Mellon University, described the book as “a truly distinctive and valuable coverage” that is “well written, loaded with many interesting facts and historical accounts, and extremely accessible to the general reader.”

The book received the 2018 IPPY Independent Publishers Award Bronze Medal for Best Regional Non-Fiction in the Eastern Atlantic category.

Thomas G. Leech is a retired Chief Engineer of Bridges and Structures for Gannett Fleming, Inc., and currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of Civil Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Throughout his distinguished career, he has received numerous honors, including the 2012 Engineer of the Year Award from the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania and the 2015 Distinguished Civil Engineer Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers Pittsburgh Section.

Bridges… Pittsburgh at the Point… A Journey Through History stands as both a celebration of engineering excellence and a tribute to the enduring stories that bridges carry across generations.
